Satan is
the chief adversary of God
and the leader of the forces of darkness.
His name means
“adversary” or “accuser.”
He is a real, personal, and powerful spiritual being
who opposes God,
deceives humanity,
and seeks to destroy God’s purposes.
Although he is a formidable enemy,
Scripture makes it clear that
he is a defeated foe
whose final judgment is certain.
¶ Biblical Names and Titles
Satan is referred to by several names and descriptions in the Bible:
- Satan — “Adversary” or “Accuser” (Job 1:6; Zechariah 3:1-2)
- Devil — “Slanderer” or “False accuser” (Matthew 4:1; Revelation 12:9)
- Dragon and Serpent — Emphasizing his deceptive and destructive nature (Revelation 12:9; 20:2)
- The god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4)
- The ruler of this world (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11)
- The prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2)
- The father of lies (John 8:44)
- The tempter (Matthew 4:3; 1 Thessalonians 3:5)
These titles reveal his character and the scope of his influence.
¶ Origin and Fall
Satan was originally created as a high-ranking angelic being. Two key passages describe his fall:
- Ezekiel 28:12-19 — Describes a “guardian cherub” who was perfect until iniquity was found in him. He became proud because of his beauty and wisdom.
- Isaiah 14:12-15 — Describes the fall of “Lucifer” (morning star) who sought to exalt himself above God.
Although these passages are addressed to earthly kings (Tyre and Babylon), they contain a deeper description of Satan’s original state and rebellion. Revelation 12:7-9 also describes a war in heaven in which Satan and his angels were cast down.
¶ Character and Activities
Satan is consistently portrayed as:
- A deceiver — He deceives the whole world (Revelation 12:9) and disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).
- A tempter — He tempted Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11) and tempts believers.
- An accuser — He accuses believers before God (Revelation 12:10; Job 1–2).
- A destroyer — He seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).
- A murderer and liar from the beginning (John 8:44).
His primary strategy is deception, accusation, and temptation rather than direct confrontation.
Although Satan is powerful, he has already been decisively defeated by Jesus Christ:
- Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8).
- Through His death and resurrection, Christ disarmed the powers and authorities (Colossians 2:15).
- Satan was cast out of heaven (Revelation 12:7-10).
- Believers have authority over him in the name of Jesus (Luke 10:17-19; James 4:7).
While Satan is still active, his time is limited, and his ultimate defeat is certain (Revelation 20:10).

Satan is not God’s equal. He is a created being who rebelled against his Creator. While he is cunning and destructive, he operates under the sovereign authority of God and has already been defeated through the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Believers are called to resist him, not fear him.
