Works of Darkness are the deeds that belong to the night.
Paul said cast them off and put on the armor of light.
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
They hide because they are shameful.
Light does not negotiate with them.
It names them and walks away dressed for day.
Night in these texts is not the good dark God named on the first day. It is the moral dark people love because their works are evil. Romans lists the night-clothes: orgies, drunkenness, sexual immorality, sensuality, quarreling, jealousy. Ephesians says the works are unfruitful. They grow nothing God will keep. It is shameful even to speak of what they do in secret, yet the church is told not to partner with them and not to stay silent. Expose them. Wake, O sleeper. Christ will shine on you. John said everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. Whoever does what is true comes to the light. Works of darkness and works of the flesh overlap, but darkness stresses the hiding and the hour. They belong to a passing night. The day is at hand. Children of light do not keep a drawer of night-work for weekends. They cast it off. They put on the Lord Jesus Christ. They make no provision for the flesh.
- Darkness loves secrecy. Exposure is part of repentance.
- Unfruitful means the harvest is empty even when the room is full.
- Quarreling and jealousy stand in the same night as the obvious vices.
- Partnership is forbidden. Curiosity dressed as ministry can become partnership.
- Casting off is as real as putting on. You cannot wear both suits.
- The secret things will not stay secret. Light is already shining.
- Shame that leads to confession is mercy. Shame that only hides is still night.
- Night Deeds – What is done as if God were not watching.
- Unfruitful – No harvest for the kingdom.
- Shameful to Speak – Not for entertainment; for exposure and leaving.
- Cast Off – The old clothes of the hour that is ending.
- Exposed – Brought into the light, not managed in the shadows.
- No Partnership – Children of light do not share the work.
- Replaced – Armor of light; the Lord Jesus Christ put on.
- Romans 13:12-14 – “The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.”
- Ephesians 5:8-14 – “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light… Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, ‘Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’”
- John 3:19-21 – “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:5-8 – “For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober… having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.”
- 2 Corinthians 6:14 – “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?”
- John 8:12 – “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
- 1 John 1:5-7 – “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie… But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
- Romans 6:21 – “But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.”
- Job 24:13-17 – There are those who rebel against the light; they do not know its ways; the murderer and the adulterer wait for twilight.
- Isaiah 29:15 – “Ah, you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, ‘Who sees us? Who knows us?’”
- Proverbs 4:19 – “The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.”
- Proverbs 7:9-10 – The young man in the twilight, in the evening, in the night and in the darkness.
- Luke 12:2-3 – “Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light…”
- 1 Peter 2:9 – He called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
- Colossians 1:13 – Delivered from the domain of darkness.
- Revelation 16:10 – The kingdom of the beast plunged into darkness; they gnawed their tongues in anguish.
Cast off the works of darkness. Put on the armor of light.

It is shameful even to speak of the things they do in secret. Speak to leave them, not to taste them.
People loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
Awake, O sleeper. Arise from the dead. Christ will shine on you.
Walk properly as in the daytime. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.
You were darkness. Now you are light in the Lord. Do not keep a night shift for the old works.
