This Present Darkness is Paul’s name for the age in which cosmic powers still operate.
The church wrestles against rulers, authorities, and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places—over this present darkness.
Present means now. Darkness means the order that hates the light.
It is not the last word. The night is far gone. The day is at hand.
Ephesians 6 does not say the church wrestles against darkness in general. It says this present darkness. The phrase ties the unseen war to a clock. This age has a god who blinds minds. This world has a ruler who is judged. This air has a prince who works in the sons of disobedience.
- Jesus called the arrest and the cross “your hour, and the power of darkness.” He also said He is the light of the world, and that whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness.
- Paul told the saints they were once darkness and are now light in the Lord.
- John said the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Present darkness is therefore the overlap: the powers still press, the world still lies in the evil one, and the light has already come.
The church does not deny the night. She refuses to call it home. She puts on the armor of light and stands until the day breaks.
- Present limits the claim of the darkness. It is this age, not the age to come.
- Darkness here is moral and spiritual rule, not the good night God made.
- The powers over this darkness are real, and they are timed.
- Saints still walk through it without belonging to it.
- Light has already shone in the heart; the day of the Lord is still ahead.
- Panic treats the darkness as forever. Sleep treats it as nothing. Watchfulness tells the truth.
- The God who said “Let light shine out of darkness” has spoken again in Christ.
- This Age – The course of this world, not the new creation finished.
- Ruled Against – Cosmic powers over it; not unclaimed space.
- Passing – The darkness is passing away; the world is passing away.
- Hour – Given at the cross, and broken there.
- Contrast – Children of light in a dark present.
- Field of Wrestling – Not flesh and blood; heavenly places.
- Not Final – The night is far gone; the day is at hand.
- Ephesians 6:12 – “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
- Ephesians 5:8-11 – “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light… Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”
- Romans 13:12 – “The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.”

- John 12:35-36, 46 – “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you… I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.”
- 1 John 2:8 – “At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.”
- 2 Corinthians 4:4-6 – The god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers; God has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8 – “But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness… let us keep awake and be sober.”
- Acts 26:18 – “…to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God.”
- 1 Peter 2:9 – He called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
- Proverbs 4:19 – “The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.”

Cosmic powers over this present darkness.
Present. Not permanent.
You were darkness. Now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
The night is far gone; the day is at hand. Put on the armor of light.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Do not remain in the dark. Do not call the night home.
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness. The true light is already shining.
