Joel’s prophecy
is the promise of the Spirit
poured out on all flesh.
And it shall come to pass afterward,
that I will pour out my Spirit
on all flesh.
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
shall be saved.
Joel spoke of a day when God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh. Sons and daughters would prophesy. Old men would dream dreams. Young men would see visions. Even on male and female servants the Spirit would be poured. Then comes the promise: everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Peter quoted this prophecy on the day of Pentecost and said, “This is what was uttered through the prophet Joel.”
- The prophecy includes both the outpouring of the Spirit and the open invitation to call on the name of the Lord.
- Everyone who calls on that name shall be saved.
- The signs in the heavens and on the earth are part of the same passage and point toward the Day of the Lord.
- The fulfillment Peter announced is the beginning of the Spirit’s work in the church.

shall be saved.
