The missionary journeys are the sendings Luke records from Antioch.
Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul.
Paul chose Silas and departed.
I must also see Rome.
The missionary journeys are the church’s name for the travels of Paul and his companions in Acts. The first sending is from Antioch. The Spirit says, Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul. They sail to Cyprus, then to Pisidian Antioch and the cities of Galatia. John Mark leaves them at Perga. The second journey begins after the split. Paul takes Silas. Timothy joins them. The Macedonian call takes them to Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, and Corinth. The third journey centers on Ephesus, then Greece, then the return toward Jerusalem. The voyage to Rome is a prisoner’s journey, not a fourth sending of the same kind. The early church is wider than these roads. These are the roads Luke follows.
- The first journey is Barnabas and Saul, with Mark at the start. Saul is called Paul at Paphos.
- The second journey is Paul and Silas, after Barnabas takes Mark to Cyprus. The council letter is already behind them.
- Rome is the end of Acts, proclaimed unhindered. It was a resolve before it was a landing.
Set apart from Antioch.
Silas after the split.
Rome at the end, unhindered.
- The journeys are sent from the church at Antioch, not from a private plan.
- The first is Barnabas and Saul, to Cyprus and Galatia.
- Mark withdraws on that journey. The split shapes the second.
- The second is Paul and Silas, into Macedonia and Achaia.
- The third dwells in Ephesus, then turns toward Jerusalem.
- The voyage to Rome is custody and shipwreck, and the kingdom is still proclaimed.
- The Sending – Antioch. Barnabas and Saul.
- The First – Cyprus, then Pisidian Antioch.
- The Leaving – Mark returns to Jerusalem.
- The Second – Paul and Silas. Macedonia.
- The Third – Ephesus, then Jerusalem.
- The Last Road – Rome, a prisoner, unhindered.
- Acts 13:2-4 – “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them… they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.”
- Acts 14:26-27 – “They sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled. And when they arrived and gathered the church together, they declared all that God had done with them.”
- Acts 15:40 – “Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord.”
- Acts 16:9-10 – “Come over to Macedonia and help us… we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.”
- Acts 19:21 – “Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, ‘After I have been there, I must also see Rome.’”
- Acts 28:30-31 – “He lived there two whole years… proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.”
Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.
Paul chose Silas and departed.
I must also see Rome.
The journeys are those sendings. Antioch, Cyprus, the split, Macedonia, Ephesus, and a prisoner preaching in Rome. The early church is larger than the roads. These are the roads Luke writes.
