Assurance of salvation is
the confident knowledge
that one is truly saved
and will spend eternity with God.
It is a gift of God’s grace
that brings peace, joy, and security
to believers.
The Bible encourages believers to have
full assurance of their salvation
while also warning against false assurance.
The New Testament repeatedly encourages believers to have assurance:
- “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:13)
- The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8:16).
- God has given us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14; 2 Corinthians 1:22).
Assurance is not presumption but a well-grounded confidence based on God’s promises and the work of the Holy Spirit.
True assurance is based on several reliable foundations:
Assurance grows as we walk closely with Christ.
¶ How to Gain and Maintain Assurance
Practical ways to grow in assurance include:
When doubts arise, we should examine our hearts but ultimately rest in God’s promises rather than our feelings.
The Bible warns against a false sense of security:
- Not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom (Matthew 7:21-23).
- Those who continue in sin without repentance give evidence that they were never truly saved (1 John 3:6-10).
- We are called to make our calling and election sure (2 Peter 1:10).
Genuine assurance leads to holiness, not complacency.
- 1 John 5:13 – “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” John states the purpose of the letter. Assurance is not a guess added later. He writes so that believers may know they have eternal life. The knowing is for those who believe in the name of the Son of God. The letter’s tests of obedience, love, and confession are how that knowing is kept honest.
- Romans 8:15-16 – “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Assurance is a witness, not a mood. The Spirit of adoption cries Abba, Father, and bears witness with our spirit that we are children. The spirit of slavery falls back into fear. This witness does not.
- Ephesians 1:13-14 – “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” The seal is the promised Holy Spirit. The guarantee holds until the inheritance is taken possession of. Assurance looks at the seal God set, not at the strength of yesterday’s feeling.
- 2 Corinthians 13:5 – “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” Examination belongs in assurance. It asks whether Christ is in you. It is not a command to live in doubt. The test is real. Failing it is possible. Passing it is Christ in you, which is what the examination is looking for.
- Hebrews 10:22 – “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” Full assurance of faith is how the church draws near. The ground is a sprinkled heart and a washed body, the cleansing Christ gives, not a clean record we assembled. The next line says hold fast the confession, for He who promised is faithful.
- 2 Peter 1:10-11 – “Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Calling and election are confirmed by practicing the qualities Peter has just named: faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, love. Diligence does not create the calling. It confirms it. The entrance is provided.
- John 10:27-29 – “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” The Shepherd’s hand is the ground under the knowing. He gives eternal life. They will never perish. No one snatches them out of His hand, or out of the Father’s hand. Hearing and following are the mark of the sheep. The hold is His.
Assurance of salvation is a wonderful gift from God that brings peace and confidence. It is based on the finished work of Christ and the testimony of the Holy Spirit. While we should examine ourselves, we should ultimately rest in God’s promises rather than our feelings. True assurance leads to a life of holiness, obedience, and joy.
