A second chance is the work given again after a real withdrawal.
Get Mark and bring him with you,
for he is very useful to me for ministry.
Barnabas wanted to take him when Paul would not.
John Mark left Paul and Barnabas in Pamphylia and returned to Jerusalem. On the next journey Barnabas wanted to take him. Paul thought it best not to take a man who had withdrawn. They parted. Barnabas took Mark to Cyprus. That was the second chance before the apostle agreed. Years later Paul tells Timothy to get Mark and bring him, because he is very useful for ministry. The church does not invent a second chance. The same apostle who refused him asks for him.
- Useful for ministry is the later word. The second chance is the space between the withdrawal and that word.
- Peter denied the Lord and was restored by name. Mark’s story is smaller. The pattern is the same Lord.
- A second chance is not a denial that the first failure happened. Paul still called it a withdrawal.
He withdrew. Barnabas took him anyway.
Later Paul said, Get Mark.
The failure was real. The later call was real.
- Mark’s second chance began with Barnabas, not with Paul’s approval.
- Paul later calls the same man useful for ministry.
- The withdrawal is not rewritten. It is outlived.
- Peter’s restoration is the larger pattern of a named failure and a named return.
- A second chance is for the work, not for a cleaned-up reputation.
- Someone still has to bring the man. Timothy is told to get him.
- The Withdrawal – John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
- The Advocate – Barnabas wanted to take him.
- The Refusal – Paul would not, then.
- The Island – Cyprus, with Barnabas.
- The Later Word – Useful to me for ministry.
- The Fetch – Get Mark and bring him.
- Acts 13:13 – “John left them and returned to Jerusalem.”
- Acts 15:37-39 – “Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark… Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them… Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus.”
- 2 Timothy 4:11 – “Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.”
- John 21:15-17 – “Simon, son of John, do you love me?… Feed my sheep.” The named restoration of Peter.
- Colossians 4:10 – “Mark the cousin of Barnabas… if he comes to you, welcome him.”
John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark.
Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.
A second chance does not erase the leaving. Barnabas took him. Paul later asked for him. Welcome him.
