Fear is the heart’s alarm
—
holy when it bows to God,
bitter when it forgets who is in the boat.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Why are you so afraid?
Have you still no faith?
Fear not, for I am with you.
Perfect love casts out fear.
There is fear that saves the soul,
and fear that sinks the disciples while He sleeps.
Scripture will not use one word as if all trembling were the same.
- The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever. It is hate of evil, the beginning of knowledge, the treasure of Zion.
- Abraham feared God and did not withhold the son.
- The midwives feared God and would not kill the boys.
- Israel saw the sea close and feared the Lord and believed. That fear is worship with its eyes open.
- Another fear is the storm in the chest when the waves are high and the promise is forgotten. Jesus asks why they are afraid after He has said they will reach the other side.
Do not fear those who kill the body. Fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. That is not panic. That is a right scale. The slave’s fear of a harsh master is not the Spirit we received. You received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba. Perfect love casts out fear—the fear that has to do with punishment—because the judged already stood in our place. Fear not is the Bible’s most repeated mercy to people who have every earthly reason to shake.
The Lord is with you.
That sentence changes the alarm.
- Fear of the Lord is not the same spirit as terror that God cannot be trusted.
- Why are you afraid is a faith question, not a scolding of honest nerves.
- Fear Him who judges the soul puts tyrants back in their size.
- Abba and slavish fear cannot share the same throne.
- Perfect love casts out the fear of punishment, not the fear of God.
- Fear not is command and gift, grounded in I am with you.
- The beginning of wisdom is this fear. Folly starts when it dies.
- Of the Lord – Beginning of wisdom; clean; hate of evil.
- In the Storm – Little faith; Do You not care?

- 1 John 4:18 – There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
- Psalm 27:1 – The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
- Psalm 56:3-4 – When I am afraid, I put my trust in You… in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

Do not throw out holy fear to calm your nerves. Do not baptize panic and call it piety. Fear the Lord. Trust the One in the boat. Let love cast out the fear that still thinks the Judge is against you.
