Calming the Storm is the night the wind and the sea learned His voice.
A great windstorm arose,
and the waves were breaking into the boat,
so that the boat was already filling.
He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.
They woke Him and said,
Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?
He awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Peace!
Be still!
And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Why are you so afraid?
Have you still no faith?
Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?
He had said, Let us go across to the other side. That word was already a promise. The squall on Galilee did not cancel it. Disciples who knew water better than sermons still decided they were dying while the Maker of water slept. Do You not care is the prayer of panic. He cares. He also sleeps because the boat is not the last word. Peace, be still is the same authority that said, Let there be light. The psalms already knew a God who stilled the roaring of the seas.
Jonah slept in a boat too, and the sailors woke him to a god who might notice them. This sleeper is not Jonah. He rebukes the storm the way He rebukes demons. Great fear replaces great wind. Who then is this? is the right question.
Mighty God on Isaiah’s list is not a Christmas title only. The other side still waited. The Gerasene shore and a legion were ahead. He does not calm every lake on our schedule. He does show who is in the boat. Faith is not the absence of waves. It is remembering who said they would reach the other side.
- Let us go across is a word to believe before the weather agrees.
- Sleep in the storm is not neglect. It is the peace they did not have.
- Do You not care is honest and wrong at once. He cares. He is not frantic.
- Rebuke is personal language. Creation is not a rival god.
- Great calm after great storm is His signature, not their seamanship.
- Who then is this is worship beginning to find a name.
- The other side still happens. The miracle serves the crossing, not the tourist.
- The Word First – Let us go across to the other side.
- The Sleep – Cushion in the stern; trust in the dark.
- The Panic – Filling boat; Teacher, do You not care?
- The Rebuke – Peace! Be still! to wind and sea.
- The Calm – Great calm; nature hushed.
- The Question – Why are you afraid? Where is your faith?
- The Confession – Who then is this? Even wind and sea obey.
- Mark 4:35-41 – “On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side.’… And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’ And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’”
- Matthew 8:23-27 – A great storm on the sea… “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” He rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
- Luke 8:22-25 – “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.”… He rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. “Where is your faith?” “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
- Psalm 107:23-30 – Some went down to the sea in ships… He commanded and raised the stormy wind… They cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
- Psalm 89:8-9 – You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them.
- Psalm 65:7 – Who stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves.
- Job 38:8-11 – Who shut in the sea with doors… “Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed”?
- Jonah 1:4-6, 15 – The Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea… Jonah was fast asleep. “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god!”… the sea ceased from its raging.
- Nahum 1:3-4 – The Lord has His way in whirlwind and storm… He rebukes the sea and makes it dry.
- Isaiah 9:6 – His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God.
- Colossians 1:16-17 – All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
- Hebrews 1:3 – He upholds the universe by the word of His power.
- Mark 5:1 – They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
- John 6:16-21 – He came to them walking on the sea. “It is I; do not be afraid.”
Let us go across to the other side.
A great windstorm arose. He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.
Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?
Peace! Be still! The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?
Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?
He made the storm be still. In Him all things hold together.
Do not measure His care by the size of the waves. He said the other side. He sleeps without panic. He speaks, and proud water stops. Cry to Him. Then answer the question: Who is this in the boat with you?
