Pure in Heart is the Beatitude that ends in sight.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see God.
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart.
Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Purity here is not polish on the outside.
It is a heart made single for Him
—
and the promise is that they will see.
Jesus speaks this on the mountain after poverty of spirit, mourning, meekness, and hunger for righteousness. The next blessing is mercy; then this inner cleanliness; then peacemaking and persecution. Heart in His mouth is the well the Father already searches. Out of it come the things that defile. A cup can be washed on the outside and still be full of greed. Woe to that religion. Pure means unmixed—free from the double soul that wants God and the idol in the same chamber.
David asked for it after he had wrecked a house and a man: Create in me a clean heart. The psalms ask who may stand in His holy place. Clean hands and a pure heart; who does not lift up his soul to what is false. The promise is not a better reputation. They shall see God. Moses could not see the face and live. The pure in heart are pointed at the end the apostles name: we shall see Him as He is. Everyone who hopes in that purifies himself as He is pure. The new heart is the root. Purity is the fruit and the fight. See God is the prize.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? He who has clean hands and a pure heart.
Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Purify your hearts, you double-minded. Draw near to God.
We shall see Him as He is. Everyone who hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure.
They will see His face.
Do not wash the cup and leave the well dirty. Ask for the clean heart. Make the inner room His alone. Mercy and peace belong with this purity. The blessing is not that men call you clean. The blessing is that you will see God.
