Rebuke is a word that stops what should not go on.
He awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea,
Peace! Be still!
He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.
He rebuked the unclean spirit.
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.
A rebuke from the Lord is not a tantrum.
It is authority naming a thing out of place.
Scripture uses rebuke of storms, fevers, demons, and of people who need to turn. Jesus does not negotiate with the squall or the spirit. He addresses them as a King addresses rebels. The fever in Simon’s house is treated the same way: not a chat with nature, a command. That is why the crowds said, What is this? A new teaching with authority. He also rebuked disciples—Get behind Me, Satan—when Peter tried to talk Him off the cross. He rebuked James and John when they wanted fire on a village.
Open rebuke is better than hidden love, says the proverb. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. Paul told Timothy to rebuke, in season and out, with complete patience. The Lord rebukes the devourer for the sake of the house. He rebukes kings for the sake of the anointed. Do not rebuke an older man harshly. Do not refuse the Lord’s rebuke as if it were hate. Whom He loves, He disciplines. The aim is not volume. The aim is that the wind cease, the fever leave, the sin stop, and the child live.
- Rebuke assumes a right order. Something is out of line.
- Storm, fever, and demon all yield to the same voice. That is who He is.
- Rebuking a person is not the same as cursing a tree in spite.
- Hidden love that never speaks can leave a brother in the storm.
- Patience belongs with the pastoral rebuke. Authority is not cruelty.
- Satan can hide in a friend’s sentence. The rebuke then is mercy.
- Love and rebuke share a house in the risen Lord’s mouth.

The Lord rebuke you, O Satan.
Do not call every silence kindness. Do not call every shout a rebuke from God. Let His voice stop what is wrong—in the sea, in the house, in the heart. Receive the wound that is faithful. Speak when love requires it. The aim is that the thing leave, and the person live.
