Remembrance is the command of the Supper: do this in remembrance of Me.
Do this in remembrance of me.
Jesus took bread, broke it, and said, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. The cup is the new covenant in His blood, to be drunk in the same remembrance. Paul received this from the Lord and delivered it to Corinth. As often as they eat and drink, they proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Remembrance is not a vague memory. It is the church doing what He said, with the bread and the cup, until He comes. The Lord’s Supper is that act.
- The Passover was a remembrance of the night the Lord brought Israel out. This remembrance is of the body given and the blood poured out.
- Paul ties the act to the night He was betrayed. The church remembers that night.
- Until He comes. Remembrance looks back and looks forward.
