Tongues are languages given for a sign and for prayer, to be interpreted in the assembly.

At Pentecost the disciples spoke in other tongues, and the crowd heard the mighty works of God in their own languages. Paul thanks God that he speaks in tongues more than the Corinthians, and he would rather speak five words with his mind in the assembly than ten thousand in a tongue. If there is no interpreter, the speaker is to keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. Tongues are a sign for unbelievers. Prophecy builds the church. The church does not forbid tongues. It does not let them run without interpretation.
