Covenant renewal is Israel saying again the words the Lord already gave.
All that the Lord has spoken we will do.
Covenant renewal is not a new bargain. It is the people hearing the book again and taking their stand under it. At Sinai Israel says, All that the Lord has spoken we will do. Moses sprinkles the blood of the covenant. Joshua renews the covenant at Shechem and says, Choose this day whom you will serve. Josiah reads the book that was found, and the people stand to the covenant. Nehemiah’s assembly confesses and signs. Jesus does not renew Sinai. He gives the new covenant in His blood.
- The book is read aloud. Renewal without the words is only a mood.
- Blood marks Sinai’s renewal. The cup marks the new covenant.
- The church does not go back to Shechem for a better law. It remembers the cup.
All that the Lord has spoken we will do.
Choose this day whom you will serve.
This cup is the new covenant in my blood.
- Renewal repeats the covenant already given. It does not invent one.
- Sinai, Shechem, Josiah, and Nehemiah are the great readings.
- The book is read in the hearing of the people.
- Blood of the covenant is sprinkled at Sinai.
- Jesus calls the cup the new covenant in His blood.
- A renewed promise still needs the mediator who keeps it.
