Israel is the people the Lord brought out of Egypt and called His own.
I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God.
Israel is the new name given to Jacob, and then the name of the twelve tribes who came from him. The Lord tells Moses to say to Pharaoh, Israel is my son, my firstborn. He brings them out of Egypt, gives the law at Sinai, and settles them in the land. The kingdom splits. The northern tribes are carried to Assyria. Judah goes to Babylon and a remnant returns. Paul says the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable, and that a partial hardening has come until the fullness of the Gentiles. The church does not erase this people. It is grafted, by faith, into the root.
- The name is a man, then a family, then a nation, then a remnant.
- Not every child of Abraham is the Israel of the promise. Paul says so in Romans 9.
- Jesus is the son of David and the king of this people, and the Savior of the nations.
Israel is my son, my firstborn.
I will be your God.
The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
- Israel is Jacob’s name and the name of the tribes.
- The Lord calls the people His firstborn son.
- Exodus, Sinai, and the land are the founding acts.
- The split and the exiles do not end the calling.
- A partial hardening remains until the fullness of the Gentiles.
- The church is not a replacement that cancels the gifts and the calling.
- The Man – Jacob, named Israel.
- The Son – My firstborn, said to Pharaoh.
- The Covenant – I will be your God.
- The Split – Israel and Judah.
- The Remnant – A return, and a hardening.
- The Root – The church grafted in.
- Genesis 32:28 – “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
- Exodus 4:22 – “Israel is my firstborn son.”
- Exodus 6:7 – “I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God.”
- Romans 11:25-29 – “A partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in… the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”
Israel is my firstborn son.
I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God.
The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
Israel is this people. Not a metaphor only. A partial hardening is not a cancelled call.
