The Jubilee is the fiftieth year, when liberty is proclaimed and the land returns.
You shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land.
After seven sabbaths of years, forty-nine years, Israel sounds the trumpet on the Day of Atonement and consecrates the fiftieth year. It is a Jubilee. Each returns to his property and to his clan. The land is not sold in perpetuity, because the land is the Lord’s. Slaves of the people are released. Jesus reads Isaiah’s proclamation of liberty in the synagogue at Nazareth and says the Scripture is fulfilled in their hearing. The Jubilee is the law’s picture of a release the Messiah announces.
