An offering is what Israel brings to the Lord at the altar He named.
When anyone brings an offering to the Lord.
Leviticus opens with the offerings: burnt, grain, peace, sin, and guilt. Each has a place, a portion burned, and a reason. The burnt offering is wholly for the Lord. The peace offering is shared. The sin and guilt offerings deal with particular sins. Israel does not invent the gifts. The Lord says what to bring and how. Jesus offers Himself once. Hebrews says He did away with the first order to establish the second. The church brings a sacrifice of praise, not another animal.
- The herd, the flock, and the birds are named, so the poor are not shut out.
- Salt belongs with the offerings. Leaven does not belong on the altar.
- To obey is better than sacrifice when the sacrifice is used to cover a refused word.
