Tithe is the tenth
—
holy to the Lord.
All the tithe of the land,
whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees,
is the Lord’s;
it is holy to the Lord.
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse,
that there may be food in My house.
And thereby put Me to the test,
says the Lord of hosts.
Will a man rob God?
Abraham gave a tenth to Melchizedek.
Jesus said the Pharisees tithed mint and neglected justice.
The tenth is not a slot machine.
It is worship with the first and the count.
Before Sinai, Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything after the slaughter of the kings. Jacob vowed a tenth if God would keep him. The Law then tied the tenth to the land, the Levites, the feast, and the poor—food in the house, provision for those who served at the tent, celebration before the Lord, and care for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.
Malachi found a returned people with a standing temple and closed hands. You are robbing Me. Bring the full tithe. Windows of heaven and a rebuked devourer are the Lord’s own dare in that argument—not a formula for a luxury gospel. Jesus assumed the practice in Israel and still ripped the cloak off men who measured leaves and skipped the weightier matters: justice, mercy, faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
Hebrews watches Abraham’s tenth and says the lesser is blessed by the greater; Levi paid tithes through Abraham to a priest who lives. The church is not Levitical land-Israel. It is a people who give themselves first to the Lord, then generously, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. The storehouse lesson remains: God’s house should not starve while barns swell. The heart still follows the treasure.

- Melchizedek shows the tenth older than Moses, aimed at a greater priest.
