Treasure is what you store
—
and what stores you.
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.
For where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also.
The kingdom is a treasure hidden in a field,
and a pearl of great price.
A fool stores barns and is not rich toward God.
Treasure is never only a pile.
It is a magnet for the heart.
Jesus will not let a disciple pretend the account book and the soul are different rooms.
- Earth-treasure is real and it dies: moth, rust, thief, night when the soul is required.
- Heaven-treasure is real and it lasts: alms, faith, the poor remembered, a name written, a Master’s joy.
The heart follows the store the way a needle follows north. That is why He said seek first the kingdom. The hidden treasure and the pearl are the same lesson from the other side—the kingdom is worth selling all.
Israel was to be His treasured possession. The fear of the Lord is Zion’s treasure. In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
- Paul counted the former gains as loss for the surpassing worth of knowing Him.
- Mary’s flask was a year’s wages broken on His feet.
- Judas kept the bag and loved what was in it.
Two treasuries, two lords.
You cannot serve God and money.
Store the one that cannot be stolen while you sleep.
- Treasure locates the heart. Follow the store to find the worship.
- Earth-treasure has predators built into the sentence: moth, rust, thief.

- Luke 12:21, 33-34 – So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. Sell your possessions and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail.
