Balaam’s talking donkey is the animal that saw the angel,
and rebuked the prophet.
The donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road,
with a drawn sword in his hand.
Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey.
A speechless donkey spoke with human voice
and restrained the prophet’s madness.
Balaam is on the way to Balak. God’s anger is kindled because he went. The angel of the Lord stands in the road with a drawn sword. The donkey sees him. Balaam does not. She turns aside, crushes his foot against a wall, and lies down. He strikes her three times. The Lord opens her mouth. She asks what she has done. Then the Lord opens Balaam’s eyes.
- The seer is blind. The beast sees the angel. The hireling who came to curse a people cannot see the sword in his own path.
- The donkey’s record is the rebuke. She has never treated him this way. He is the one off the way.
- Peter says a speechless donkey spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness. The New Testament does not treat the story as a fable.
The mouth was opened by the Lord. The words were a question, not a curse on Israel. Balaam still goes on, and he still must speak only the word God gives. The donkey did not save his later counsel. She exposed him on the road.
The donkey saw the sword.
The prophet did not.
The Lord opened her mouth.
Then He opened Balaam’s eyes.
- The angel is in the road before anyone curses Israel.
- The donkey sees three times. Balaam strikes three times.
- The Lord opens the donkey’s mouth, then the prophet’s eyes.
- Her speech is a rebuke, not a new oracle about Jacob.
- Peter calls it the restraint of the prophet’s madness.
- Seeing the angel does not make Balaam clean. The Peor counsel comes later.
- The Road – Balaam going to Balak.
- The Angel – Standing with a drawn sword.
- The Sight – The donkey sees. The prophet does not.
- The Strikes – Three blows for three warnings.
- The Mouth – Opened by the Lord.
- The Eyes – Opened after the rebuke.
- The Witness – Peter says she restrained his madness.
- Numbers 22:22-23 – “God’s anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the way as his adversary… And the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand.”
- Numbers 22:28-30 – “Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, ‘What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?’ … ‘Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Is it my habit to treat you this way?’”
- Numbers 22:31 – “Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand.”
- Numbers 22:35 – “Go with the men, but speak only the word that I tell you.”
- 2 Peter 2:15-16 – “They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.”
The donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand.
Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey.
What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?
Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam.
A speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.
The prophet for hire could not see the sword. The donkey could. The Lord opened her mouth, then opened his eyes. Do not miss the rebuke. Seeing the angel did not keep him from the later counsel.
