Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the sin Jesus said will not be forgiven.
Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,
but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven,
either in this age or in the age to come.
They were saying,
He has an unclean spirit.
It is not a careless sentence you cannot remember.
It is a settled verdict that the Spirit’s work is the devil’s
—
spoken by people watching a mute man talk and calling it Beelzebul.
The warning sits on the same page as the blind and mute demoniac. The crowd says Son of David. The Pharisees say prince of demons. Mark states the reason for the saying: they were saying He has an unclean spirit. That is the blasphemy in view—knowing enough light to name the Holy One and choosing to credit hell. Speak against the Son of Man, and mercy is still announced: Father, forgive them; Paul hunted the church and obtained mercy because he acted ignorantly in unbelief. The line is drawn at the Spirit because the Spirit is how the Father and the Son are present in the works. To call that presence Beelzebul is not a weak day. It is a hardened campaign. Luke also warns that whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, in a setting about confessing or denying the Son before men. The sin is not that you once feared you had committed it. Tender fear is usually evidence of a heart the Spirit still convicts. The people in the story are not asking if they went too far. They are explaining Jesus away. There remains a kind of seeing that will not repent. That is the danger. The open gospel is still: everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
- Mark attaches the warning to a specific slander: He has an unclean spirit.
- Word against the Son of Man can be forgiven. Many mockers later believed.
- The Spirit is the present power of the kingdom in the works they saw.
- Hardness, not a slip of the tongue, is the climate of this sin.
- Fear that you have done it is not the profile of the men who were doing it.
- Confessing Christ before men is Luke’s companion theme. Do not deny the Witness.
- The same chapter still offers rest for the weary. The door is not shut on seekers.
- The Setting – Works of the Spirit; Beelzebul slander.
- The Charge – He has an unclean spirit.
- Son of Man – Speech against Him may still find mercy.
- The Spirit – Speech that names His work as hell’s.
- This Age and the Age to Come – No future acquittal for that verdict.
- Hardened Seeing – Light refused as light.
- The Open Call – Whoever comes; whoever calls.
- Matthew 12:31-32 – “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”
- Mark 3:28-30 – “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”—for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
- Luke 12:8-10 – Everyone who acknowledges Me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge… whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
- Matthew 12:24, 28 – It is only by Beelzebul… If it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
- 1 Timothy 1:13-16 – I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief… Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
- Luke 23:34 – “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
- John 16:8-9 – He will convict the world concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me.
- Hebrews 3:12-13 – Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart… exhort one another… that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
- Hebrews 10:26-29 – If we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth… and has outraged the Spirit of grace.
- 1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.
- Romans 10:13 – Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
- John 6:37 – Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.
Whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
They were saying, He has an unclean spirit.
If it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
I received mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Do not call the Spirit’s work the devil’s. That is the slander under the warning.
If you want forgiveness, you are not playing their part. Confess Christ. Do not harden. The weary are still invited. The men who committed this sin were not seeking mercy. They were renaming the Holy Spirit. Come to the Son. He will not cast you out.
