Counselor is the name joined to Wonderful on the Child who is born.
His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God,
Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
This also comes from the Lord of hosts;
He is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.
The Spirit is another Helper
—another Counselor—
whom the Father sends in the Son’s name.
Counsel here is not a hint.
It is the plan that stands,
and the Person who leads you in it.
Kings kept counselors. Ahithophel’s word used to be as if one consulted the word of God—until the Lord turned it. Isaiah’s Child does not hire a cabinet. He is the Counsel. Wonderful keeps the title from sounding like a paid adviser. Pele-yoetz is marvel and strategy in one Name. The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; the counsel of the Lord stands forever. My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose.
Jesus did not speak from Himself. The Father who sent Me has Himself given Me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. Before the cross He promised another Paraclete: Helper, Advocate, Counselor. He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said. He will guide you into all the truth. The church does not go to a vacant office.
