Mighty God is the third name Isaiah gave the Child who is born.
His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
A son is given
—
and He is called El Gibbor,
God the Hero,
God the Warrior.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
The Child on the shoulder of government is not a mascot.
He is God in strength.
Isaiah had already used Mighty God of the Holy One of Israel. In that day the remnant will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the Mighty God. Then the same title sits on the Son who is given. The church did not invent the leap. The prophet put God’s own war-name on the Child. Gibbor is the word for champions and for the Lord mighty in battle. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Jesus is that strength in flesh: winds obey, graves open, a legion leaves a man, bread multiplies, death cannot keep Him. Thomas said My Lord and my God. The Word was God, and the Word became flesh. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. Mighty is not only the stilling of storms. It is the cross, which looked like weakness and disarmed the rulers and authorities. The government on His shoulder will not slip because the shoulder belongs to Mighty God.
- El Gibbor in Isaiah is God’s title before it is the Child’s—and then it is the Child’s.
- Warrior-strength and deity are in one name, not two hobbies.
- The remnant leans on the Mighty God. The church leans on the same Name born.
- Weakness of the cross is not the absence of might. It is might saving.
- All authority is the risen form of this title.
- Wonderful Counselor plans. Mighty God performs.
- Lord of hosts and Child in a manger are not two religions.
- The Name on the Child – Isaiah 9; government on His shoulder.
- The Name on the Lord – Isaiah 10; remnant returning to El Gibbor.

- Isaiah 9:6-7 – “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.”

- 1 Corinthians 1:24-25 – Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The weakness of God is stronger than men.
- Titus 2:13 – Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.
- Hebrews 1:3, 8 – He upholds the universe by the word of His power… But of the Son He says, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
- Revelation 1:8 – “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.
The Word was God. The Word became flesh. My Lord and my God!
