¶ Feeding the Four Thousand
Feeding the Four Thousand is the second wilderness table, not a copy-paste of the five thousand.
I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.
How many loaves do you have? They said, Seven, and a few small fish.
He took the seven loaves and the fish,
and having given thanks He broke them and gave them to the disciples,
and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied.
Seven baskets full of the broken pieces were left.
Those who ate were four thousand men,
besides women and children.
Mark sets this after the Gentile Decapolis, after a deaf man hears and a crowd glorifies the God of Israel. Three days they have stayed. If He sends them away hungry, they will faint on the road. The Twelve still talk like accountants: Where in this desolate place can anyone get enough bread? He does not scold the memory of the five thousand out of them. He asks what they have. Seven loaves. A few fish. Thanks. Break. Give. Satisfaction again. The leftover baskets are large ones this time—seven, not twelve.
Later in the boat He will ask, Do you not remember? Five thousand and twelve baskets. Four thousand and seven. How is it that you fail to understand? Two meals train the same lesson on two shores: Jewish crowd and a mixed wilderness, covenant numbers still hanging in the air, compassion that will not let them faint.
Elisha had fed a hundred from firstfruits and had some left. The greater Elisha feeds thousands twice and still the disciples worry about one loaf in the boat. The sign is mercy. The rebuke is how quickly a full stomach forgets.
- Three days with Him is already a kind of worship before the bread.
- Compassion names fainting on the road. He counts the walk home.
- Seven and four thousand are not a sloppy recount of five and twelve.
- Large baskets and small baskets both preach leftover mercy.
- Do you not remember is how He treats two miracles as one classroom.
- Desolate place is His tablecloth again. He does not need a market.
- Gentiles eating from His hand belongs in the same Gospel as the first feeding.
¶ Key Aspects of Feeding the Four Thousand
- Three Days – Crowd that stayed; empty provision.
- Compassion – They will faint on the way.
- Seven Loaves – And a few small fish.
- Thanks and Break – Same verbs as the first table and the last supper.
- Four Thousand – Men, besides women and children.
- Seven Baskets – Large hampers left over.

- Matthew 15:32-38 – “Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.’… They said, ‘Seven, and a few small fish.’ And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.”
- Mark 8:1-9 – In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat… “Where can anyone get bread to satisfy these people in this desolate place?”… They ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. And there were about four thousand people.
- Mark 8:17-21 – “Do you not yet perceive or understand?… When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
- Matthew 16:9-10 – Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand… or the seven loaves for the four thousand?
- Matthew 15:29-31 – He went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee… The crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking… And they glorified the God of Israel.
- Mark 7:31 – He returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.
- 2 Kings 4:42-44 – Elisha: Give to the men, that they may eat. They shall eat and have some left.
- Matthew 14:19-21 – Five loaves, two fish, five thousand, twelve baskets.
- Psalm 78:19 – Can God spread a table in the wilderness?
- Philippians 4:19 – My God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
- John 6:35 – I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger.
I have compassion on the crowd. They have been with Me now three days and have nothing to eat. I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.
How many loaves do you have? Seven, and a few small fish.
They all ate and were satisfied. Seven baskets full left over. Four thousand men, besides women and children.
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand—twelve. And the seven for the four thousand—seven. Do you not yet understand?
Can God spread a table in the wilderness? He did. Twice.
Do not collapse the two meals into one story. He fed Israel’s crowd and a wilderness crowd. He still asks what you have. Give thanks. Break it. Remember both baskets. He will not let them faint on the road.
