¶ Feeding the Five Thousand
Feeding the Five Thousand is the sign all four Gospels keep.
When He went ashore He saw a great crowd,
and He had compassion on them,
because they were like sheep without a shepherd.
They said, We have only five loaves here and two fish.
He said, Bring them here to Me.
He looked up to heaven,
said a blessing,
broke the loaves,
and gave them to the disciples,
and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied,
and they took up twelve baskets of broken pieces.
Those who ate were about five thousand men,
besides women and children.
The place is a desolate spot. The hour is late. The crowd has followed because of signs, or because He taught them many things. The disciples see a problem of money and miles: send them away to the villages to buy food. He answers, You give them something to eat. Philip names two hundred denarii. Andrew finds a boy with five barley loaves and two fish—but what are they among so many? The little is laid in His hands. He orders them to sit in groups on the green grass, like a flock at rest. Blessing, breaking, giving—the same verbs that will sit over bread on the night He is betrayed. Twelve baskets left over match twelve disciples who thought the math was closed. John says that when the people saw the sign they said, This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world, and they meant to take Him by force and make Him king. He withdrew. The next day He would not let them stay at the loaves. I am the bread of life. Work not for the food that perishes. The miracle is compassion with leftover mercy. It is also a door into the Son Himself. Manna in the wilderness fed fathers who still died. This bread is a Person.
- Compassion starts the meal. Sheep without a shepherd are not first a budget item.
- You give them something to eat puts the church in the middle of an impossible table.
- What are they among so many is honest—and unfinished until it is given to Him.
- He blesses, breaks, and gives. Disciples only pass what they have received.
- Satisfied and leftover is the measure of His hand, not of the boy’s lunch.
- They wanted a king of bread. He would be the Bread, and then the broken King.
- Twelve baskets preach provision that outlasts the afternoon.

And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.”
