The Coin in the Fish’s Mouth is the tax Jesus paid without owing it.
Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?
He said, Yes.
What do you think, Simon?
From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax?
From their sons or from others?
From others.
Then the sons are free.
But so that we may not give offense,
go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up,
and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel.
Take that and give it to them for Me and for yourself.
The Son does not owe the house tax.
He pays it
—
and Peter’s
—
from a fish.
Collectors of the temple half-shekel came to Capernaum. Every Jewish man was expected to fund the house. Peter answered for his Master before he asked his Master. Jesus got there first: What do you think, Simon? Kings do not tax their own sons. The temple is His Father’s house. The Son is free. Freedom here is status, not stinginess. So that we may not give offense He sends Peter to work the way Peter knows—a hook, not a net this time—and names the first fish, the open mouth, the exact coin that covers two.
The miracle is small on purpose. No crowd. No sermon on the beach. Provision meets a duty the Son did not owe, so that a stumbling block would not sit in the gate of the house He came to cleanse and, soon, to replace with His body. Render to Caesar what is Caesar’s will come later with a different coin. This coin is for the temple and for a lesson in sonship. Free, and still careful not to trip the weak. The sea pays the tax the Son could have refused.
- Yes from Peter was faster than wisdom. Jesus still covers him.
- Sons are free is the center, not the fish.
- So that we may not give offense is love using a right it could have waved.
- First fish, open mouth, one shekel: the command is as precise as Cana’s jars.
- For Me and for yourself binds the free Son to the still-learning disciple.
- The house He funds is the house that will reject Him. He pays anyway.
- A hook after the great nets keeps Peter a fisherman under orders.
- The Tax – Two drachmas; the temple half-shekel.
- The Question – Sons or others?
- The Verdict – The sons are free.
- The Offense Avoided – Pay so as not to stumble them.
- The Hook – First fish; a shekel in the mouth.
- For Two – Me and you.
- The Son – Greater than the house; still providing for it.
- Matthew 17:24-27 – “When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, ‘Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, ‘What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?’ And when he said, ‘From others,’ Jesus said to him, ‘Then the sons are free. However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.’”
- Exodus 30:13-16 – Each shall give a half shekel as an offering to the Lord… to make atonement for your lives… for the service of the tent of meeting.
- Matthew 12:6 – I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.
- John 2:16, 19-21 – Do not make My Father’s house a house of trade. Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. He was speaking about the temple of His body.
- Matthew 22:19-21 – Show Me the coin for the tax… “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
- Romans 13:7 – Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed.
- 1 Corinthians 8:9, 13 – Take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak… if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat.
- 1 Corinthians 9:12 – We have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.
- Matthew 17:5 – This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.
- Psalm 50:10-12 – Every beast of the forest is Mine… If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are Mine.
- Philippians 4:19 – My God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Do not let Peter’s Yes outrun the Son’s word. You are free in Him. Use the freedom so as not to trip those still counting coins at the door. He can put the tax in a fish. He already put you in the house as a child, not as a customer.
