The Miraculous Catch of Fish is the net that filled when He said so—once at the call, once after the grave.
Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.
Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at Your word I will let down the nets.
They enclosed a large number of fish,
and their nets were breaking.
Depart from me,
for I am a sinful man,
O Lord.
Do not be afraid;
from now on you will be catching men.
After He rose He stood on the shore:
Cast the net on the right side of the boat.
They were not able to haul it in.
It is the Lord.
One hundred fifty-three large fish,
and the net was not torn.
Luke’s morning starts with an empty night. Professionals have already washed the nets. Jesus teaches from Simon’s boat, then commandeers the trade. At Your word is faith against fatigue. The catch is so large they signal partners. Peter falls down at Jesus’ knees. The holiness is not the fish. It is the presence that filled the boat. From now on you will be catching men. They left everything and followed.
John’s dawn is the other bookend. Peter has gone fishing again. That night they caught nothing. A stranger on the beach speaks the old trade-command. The beloved disciple names Him. Peter throws himself into the sea. The charcoal fire waits—fish already on it—and bread. Bring some of the fish that you have just caught. The net holds. Breakfast is served by the risen Lord. Then: Simon, son of John, do you love Me? Feed My sheep.
Two catches. One voice. Empty night, then obedience, then more than they can manage, then a commission—first to men, then to lambs. The miracle is never only breakfast.
- All night and nothing is the preface He often writes under a call.
- At Your word is how a tired expert becomes a disciple.
- Depart from me is truer worship than a business plan for the net.
- Catching men does not cancel the fish. It names what the fish were for.
- The second catch finds Peter wet, forgiven toward, and still a fisherman of people.
- Net not torn after the resurrection is a quiet mercy beside the breaking nets of the first day.
- It is the Lord is how empty professionals recognize the voice they already know.
- Empty Night – Toiled and took nothing; twice.
- At Your Word – Nets down against the expert’s hours.
- Breaking Nets – Partners called; boat sinking with goodness.
- Depart from Me – Sin seen in the light of the catch.
- Catching Men – The new trade.
- Right Side of the Boat – Risen command; 153 large fish.
- Charcoal Fire – Breakfast; love asked three times; feed My sheep.
- Luke 5:4-11 – “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking… “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”… “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
- John 21:3-14 – “I am going fishing.”… That night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore… “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!”… Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”
- John 21:15-17 – “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”… “Feed my lambs.”… “Tend my sheep.”… “Feed my sheep.”
- Matthew 4:19 – “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
- Mark 1:16-18 – He saw Simon and Andrew casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
- Ezekiel 47:9-10 – Everything will live where the river goes… Fishermen will stand beside the sea. From Engedi to Eneglaim it will be a place for the spreading of nets.
- Jeremiah 16:16 – Behold, I am sending for many fishers, declares the Lord, and they shall catch them.
- Luke 5:1-3 – The crowd was pressing in on Him to hear the word of God. He saw two boats… He sat down and taught the people from the boat.
- John 21:7 – When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.

Simon, son of John, do you love Me? Feed My sheep.
Do not wash the nets as if the night had the last word. Obey the voice over empty water. Fall down if you must. Follow. After failure, recognize Him on the shore. Love Him. Feed what He caught.
