Withering of the Fig Tree is the sign on the road between Bethany and the temple.
Seeing a fig tree by the wayside,
He went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves.
He said to it,
May no fruit ever come from you again.
And the fig tree withered at once.
In Mark the word is spoken one morning and the stump is seen the next.
Leaves without fruit had met the Lord of the harvest.
It was not the season for figs, Mark says, and still the tree wore a full advertisement of leaves. In that climate early fruit can appear with the leaf. This tree promised and gave nothing. He hungered. He found leaves. He spoke a sentence, and the tree dried from the roots. The acted parable sits against the temple He had just entered—or would enter again—where religion had leaves: courts, noise, a house called prayer turned into a den of robbers. Israel as fig tree is already in the prophets.
A fig tree parable in Luke had begged one more year for digging and dung. This tree on the road gets the last word of a hungry King. The disciples marvel. How did the fig tree wither at once? He does not give a botany lesson. Have faith in God. Whoever says to this mountain, Be taken up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt… whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it. Forgive, when you stand praying. The withered tree is judgment on fruitless show. The mountain word is faith that actually speaks to God. Do not turn a warning into a charm for blighting neighbors. Turn it into a search for fruit, and into prayer that believes.
- Leaves without fruit is the charge—not that the calendar was inconvenient.
- The temple in those same hours is the larger tree with foliage.
- Luke’s barren fig tree is patience. This tree is the sentence after patience.
- From the roots means the death is not cosmetic.
- Faith in God is Jesus’ own commentary, not a side note.
- Forgiveness is bolted to the mountain-prayer so faith does not become spite.
- He hungered. The sign is not theater. The King wanted fruit.

And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
- Mark 11:12-14, 20-25 – He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.”… “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God… whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him… whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone.”

He found nothing on it but only leaves. May no fruit ever come from you again. The fig tree withered at once.
It was not the season for figs—and the tree still dressed for harvest.
Have faith in God. Say to this mountain, Be taken up and thrown into the sea, and do not doubt.
Whenever you stand praying, forgive.
My house shall be called a house of prayer. You have made it a den of robbers.
Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit. If not, you can cut it down.
Do not wear leaves for the King and hide an empty branch. Bear fruit. Pray believing. Forgive while you ask. A withered tree is a warning. A living faith speaks to God—and does not use the curse as a toy.
