¶ The Wise and Foolish Builders
The Wise and Foolish Builders is the last picture of the Sermon on the Mount.
Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
The rain fell,
and the floods came,
and the winds blew and beat on that house,
but it did not fall,
because it had been founded on the rock.
Everyone who hears these words of Mine
and does not do them
will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
The house fell,
and great was the fall of it.
Jesus has finished the sermon. Crowds are astonished at His authority. Before they leave the hillside He draws a line through the hearers. Both men hear. Both build. Both meet the same storm. The difference is doing. Rock is His words received into obedience. Sand is His words received into memory and left there.
Luke adds that the wise man dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. Digging is work before the walls go up. The storm is not a maybe. Rain, river, wind—trial, judgment, the day that tests what you built. The fall is great because the house looked finished. Lord, lord is still in the air from the verses just above. Many will say they prophesied and cast out demons. I never knew you. Hearing the Sermon is not the same as surviving it.
- The wise builder is the one who comes to Him, hears, and does.
- The foolish builder is the one who calls the sermon beautiful and sleeps on sand.
- Hearing without doing is already a foundation choice.
- Both houses look like houses until the water rises.
- The rock is His words—not sincerity, not the crowd, not the view from the slope.
- Digging deep is Luke’s extra. Obedience has depth, not only a floor plan.
- The storm comes to both. Safety is not the absence of weather.
- Great was the fall of it. Collapse is not a small correction.
- These words of Mine are the issue. The Sermon is not optional decoration on another foundation.
¶ Key Aspects of the Wise and Foolish Builders
- Two Hearers – Both listen; only one does.
- Two Foundations – Rock and sand.
- Digging Deep – Cost before the visible house.
- The Same Storm – Rain, floods, winds on both roofs.
- It Did Not Fall – Founded on the rock.
- Great Was the Fall – Sand under a finished look.
- These Words of Mine – The Sermon as foundation, not as quote.
- Matthew 7:24-25 – “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”
- Matthew 7:26-27 – “And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
- Luke 6:47-49 – “Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them… is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock… But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
- Matthew 7:21-23 – Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, lord, will enter the kingdom, but the one who does the will of My Father. I never knew you.
- Matthew 7:28-29 – The crowds were astonished at His teaching, for He was teaching them as one who had authority.
- James 1:22-25 – Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. The one who looks into the perfect law and perseveres… will be blessed in his doing.
- Ezekiel 33:31-32 – They hear what you say but they will not do it; you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice.
- Isaiah 28:16 – Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation.
- 1 Corinthians 3:11 – No one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
- 1 Peter 2:4-6 – A living stone, rejected by men but in God’s sight chosen and precious.
- Psalm 18:2 – The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer.
- Matthew 16:18 – On this rock I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
- John 13:17 – If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
- Luke 11:28 – Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.
- Luke 8:21 – My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.
- Hebrews 4:2 – The message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.
- The Tower Builder – Sit down first and count the cost, whether you have enough to finish.
Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
The rain fell, the floods came, the winds blew. It did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
Everyone who hears and does not do them built on the sand. The house fell, and great was the fall of it.
He dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.
Not everyone who says Lord, lord. The one who does the will of My Father.
Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Do not decorate sand. Dig. Hear Him. Do what He said. The storm is coming to both houses. Only one foundation holds.
