And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse.
And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.
And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse,
which shall stand for an ensign of the people.
Jesse was the father of David. The stem is the house after it was cut down. A rod comes out of that stump. Isaiah says a Branch shall grow out of his roots, and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him. He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes. The Gentiles shall seek Him. Paul quotes this of Jesus: there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles. The rod is not a new line beside David. It is David’s house, cut down, and the promised Son coming out of it. Bethlehem is the town of Jesse. The root and the offspring of David is the same Lord.
