Lydia is the seller of purple from Thyatira whose heart the Lord opened in Philippi.
The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.
She was baptized, and her household as well.
If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord,
come to my house and stay.
She prevailed upon us.
The first named convert in Europe is a woman at a river,
already a worshiper of God,
then a host of the gospel.
Paul had seen a man of Macedonia in the night. Come over and help us. In Philippi there was no synagogue mentioned—only a place of prayer by the river on the Sabbath. Women had gathered. Lydia listened. Luke calls her a worshiper of God, a God-fearer from Thyatira in the cloth trade. Purple was luxury work. The decisive sentence is not her business. The Lord opened her heart. Attention to the word is gift before it is virtue. She and her household were baptized. Then the house opened. Come and stay. Later, after the jail and the earthquake, Paul and Silas left the prison and went to Lydia’s house and saw the brothers. A riverside becomes a church address. Philippi will receive a letter about joy, partnership in the gospel, and a God who supplies every need. Lydia is not the author of that letter. She is part of why there was a church to write to. Opened heart, opened water, opened door. That is the order.
- The Lord opened her heart. Conversion is not first a sales skill.
- She was already a worshiper of God. Hearing Paul was still required.
- Household baptism follows an opened heart and a confessed Lord.
- Prevail upon us is hospitality with backbone. The mission needed a table.
- Purple does not save. It also does not disqualify. The gospel took the cloth and the river.
- A women’s prayer meeting was the beachhead of Macedonia.
- The brothers at her house show a church, not a private hobby.
- Thyatira – Hometown; later a church in Asia hears Christ’s letter.
- Seller of Purple – Trade; means; a name in the market.
- Place of Prayer – Sabbath by the river; women gathered.
- Opened Heart – The Lord’s work under the sermon.
- Baptized – She and her household.
- The House – Come and stay; the brothers gathered there.
- Philippi – Partnership that will send gifts and receive a letter.
- Acts 16:13-15 – “And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, ‘If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.’ And she prevailed upon us.”
- Acts 16:40 – “So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.”
- Acts 16:9-10 – A vision of a man of Macedonia: “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”
- Acts 16:30-34 – The jailer: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Believe in the Lord Jesus… he was baptized at once, he and all his family.
- Philippians 1:3-5 – I thank my God in all my remembrance of you… thankful for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.
- Philippians 4:15-19 – No church partnered with me in giving and receiving except you only… My God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
- Acts 16:14 – The Lord opened her heart to pay attention.
- Ezekiel 36:26 – I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
- Luke 24:45 – He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
- Acts 13:48 – As many as were appointed to eternal life believed.
- Romans 10:17 – Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
- Hebrews 13:2 – Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers.
- Revelation 2:18-19 – To the angel of the church in Thyatira: I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance.

- Seller of Purple
The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.
She was a worshiper of God, a seller of purple, from Thyatira. She heard by the river.
She was baptized, and her household as well.
If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay. She prevailed upon us.
They visited Lydia and saw the brothers.
Partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.
Do not credit the cloth. Credit the Lord who opens hearts. Hear the word. Be baptized. Open the door. The church in Europe began with a woman whose heart He unlocked and a house that would not stay shut.
