Ai is the little town that beat Israel the day after Jericho,
and fell the day the ban was faced.
They have turned their backs before their enemies,
because they have become devoted for destruction.
Israel has sinned. Up, consecrate the people.
Do not fear and do not be dismayed.
Take all the fighting men with you,
and arise, go up to Ai.
See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai,
and his people, his city, and his land.
A small place exposed a large theft.
The second visit was an ambush under a restored word.
Ai sits in the hills above Jericho, near Bethel, east of the road into the heart of the land. The spies come back confident. Do not weary all the people. Two or three thousand will do. They are few. Joshua sends too few. About thirty-six die. Hearts melt. Joshua falls on his face and asks why the Lord brought them across at all. The answer is not strategy. Israel has sinned. The devoted things of Jericho were taken, hidden, and lied about. Achan of Judah confesses the cloak, the silver, the bar of gold. The valley of Achor—trouble—gets its name that day. Then the Lord says arise. The second plan is His: a feigned retreat, an ambush behind the city, a javelin stretched out, the city burned, the king hanged until evening and buried under stones. Bethel’s men come out to help Ai and are caught in the same net. Joshua builds an altar on Mount Ebal, copies the law on stones, and reads blessing and curse. Ai is the lesson between the first shout and the covenant renewal. Victory is not a habit you carry out of Jericho. Hidden spoil stops the next town. Confessed spoil opens it.
- Few is the spies’ word. The defeat was not about numbers.
- They have become devoted for destruction. The ban had jumped the camp.
- Joshua’s face on the ground is right. The diagnosis is still sin, not morale.
- Achor means trouble. The valley keeps the name so the lesson stays local.
- The ambush is obedience, not a trick that replaces the confession.
- Ebal follows Ai. Law is read after the heap of stones, not instead of it.
- A little town can humble a people who just watched a wall fall flat.
- The Hill Town – Near Bethel; small; the next step after Jericho.
- The Few – Spies too sure; three thousand; thirty-six dead.
- The Ban in the Tent – Achan; cloak; silver; gold bar.
- The Valley – Achor; trouble; the camp consecrated.
- The Second Word – Do not fear; I have given the king into your hand.
- The Ambush – Feigned flight; javelin; the city burned.
- The Altar – Ebal; the law copied; blessing and curse read.
- Joshua 7:2-5 – Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai… “Do not have all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are few.”… And the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them.
- Joshua 7:11-12 – “Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant… they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies.”
- Joshua 7:20-21, 24-26 – “I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels… they are hidden in the earth inside my tent.”… They raised over him a great heap of stones… Therefore the name of that place is called Achor.
- Joshua 8:1-2, 18, 28-29 – “Do not fear and do not be dismayed. Take all the fighting men with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai.”… “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.”… Joshua burned Ai… he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening.
- Joshua 8:30-35 – Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord on Mount Ebal… he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses… he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse.
- Joshua 12:9 – The king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one.
- Hosea 2:15 – I will give her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope.
- Isaiah 65:10 – Sharon shall become a pasture for flocks, and the Valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down.
- 1 Corinthians 10:6, 12 – These things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did… Let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
They are few. About thirty-six died. The hearts of the people melted.
Israel has sinned. They have taken some of the devoted things. They cannot stand before their enemies.
A cloak, silver, a bar of gold, hidden in the tent. They called the place Achor.
Do not fear. I have given into your hand the king of Ai. Stretch out the javelin.
He read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse.
I will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope.
Do not march on the next town with Jericho’s spoil in a tent. Few was never the problem. Hidden ban was. Face it. Then arise. The God who stopped them at Ai is the God who gave the king into their hand—and who can still turn a valley of trouble into a door of hope.
