Galilee is the northern country where the Light first settled and from which the risen Lord sent them back to work.
Leaving Nazareth,
He went and lived in Capernaum by the sea,
in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,
so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled.
Galilee of the Gentiles
—
the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light.
He went throughout all Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease.
After He is raised He goes before you to Galilee.
There you will see Him.
It is not Judea’s hill of the temple. It is the way of the sea, mixed blood and trade, a mocked accent, Nazareth’s can-anything-good question. Isaiah had already written the map: Zebulun, Naphtali, gloom, then light. Jesus makes that land His circuit—Capernaum as own city, the lake as pulpit and road, villages that watch Sabbath healings and still plot. Crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, and beyond the Jordan press Him. Most of the Twelve are Galileans. A servant girl will later say Peter’s speech gives him away. After the grave the angel does not send them first to the sanctuary. He sends them home north. He is going before you to Galilee. The mountain of the commission is there. Some doubted. All authority is spoken over the same hills that saw loaves, storms, and a hem in a crowd. Judea holds the cross and the empty tomb. Galilee holds the years of words and the restart of the mission. Darkness had a zip code. The Light moved in.
- Galilee of the Gentiles is prophecy first, travelogue second.
- Own city on that shore means the Light chose the mocked north.
- Teaching, preaching, healing is Matthew’s summary of what Galilee received.
- An accent can cost you at a charcoal fire and still be the accent of apostles.
- He is going before you to Galilee turns home into a rendezvous, not a retreat.
- Nazareth’s contempt and Capernaum’s woe both sit inside this same country.
- The commission is spoken where the ministry began. Begin again under all authority.
- The Map – Zebulun and Naphtali; way of the sea; north of Samaria.
- The Light – Isaiah fulfilled; darkness named; a great light seen.
- The Circuit – Synagogues; villages; the lake.
- The Twelve – Fishermen; tax collector; Galilean tongues.
- The Lake – Storms stilled; nets filled; other side reached.
- The Woes – Chorazin, Bethsaida, Capernaum inside the gift.
- The Reunion – After the resurrection; mountain; nations.
- Matthew 4:12-17 – Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
- Isaiah 9:1-2 – In the latter time He has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
- Matthew 4:23 – He went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.
- Mark 1:14-15 – Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
- Matthew 28:7, 10, 16-18 – He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him… “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”… The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them… “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
- Luke 4:14-16 – Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee… He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up.
- John 7:41, 52 – “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?”… “Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
- Mark 14:70 – “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
- Acts 1:11; 2:7 – Men of Galilee… “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?”
- Matthew 4:25 – Great crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis.
Galilee of the Gentiles—the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light.
He went throughout all Galilee, teaching, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing.
The time is fulfilled. Repent and believe in the gospel.
He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.
Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee—they were wrong.
Do not despise the north country. The Light chose it. The grave sent them back to it. Walk those hills under His authority. Darkness had the first claim on the map. It does not have the last.
