Capernaum is the town by the sea that Matthew calls Jesus’ own city.
Leaving Nazareth,
He went and lived in Capernaum by the sea,
in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,
so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled.
The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light.
He taught in the synagogue.
He healed in Simon’s house.
Woe to you, Capernaum,
will you be exalted to heaven?
You will be brought down to Hades.
The town that saw so much light still had to repent.
It sat on the northwest shore of Galilee, on the road of nations, in the land Isaiah named. From there He called fishermen. A centurion’s servant was healed at a word. A paralytic came through the roof. Jairus ran from the synagogue. A woman touched the hem in the crowd. The temple-tax collectors found Peter there. He preached the bread of life in that synagogue after the loaves, and many turned back. Capernaum is gift and warning in one place-name. Light fulfilled a map. Unrepentance fulfilled a woe. Mighty works do not equal a new heart. Chorazin and Bethsaida stand in the same sentence. If the works done in you had been done in Sodom, He said, it would have remained. The stones of the synagogue still teach: hearing is not the same as following. His own city can miss its hour.
- Own city means residence and base, not that they owned Him.
- Isaiah’s darkness-to-light is why He moved from Nazareth to this shore.
- Simon’s house and the synagogue are the two rooms of the Gospel days there.
- Woe after wonders is the hardest sermon Capernaum received.
- A centurion in that town understood authority better than many in Israel.
- Bread of life was spoken where they had eaten bread. Some walked away.
- Privilege of sight raises the measure of judgment.
- By the Sea – Galilee; Zebulun and Naphtali; the way of the sea.
- His Own City – The base after Nazareth.
- The Synagogue – Teaching, unclean spirit, Jairus, hard sayings.
- Simon’s House – Fever lifted; crowds at the door at sundown.
- Mighty Works – Paralytic, servant, hem, tax-coin, many others.
- The Woe – Exalted in privilege; warned of Hades.
- The Leaving – Some disciples turned back; the Light still went on.
- Matthew 4:13-16 – Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light.”
- Matthew 9:1 – He came to His own city.
- Mark 1:21-29 – They went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching… And immediately He left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew.
- Mark 2:1-12 – When He returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that He was at home… they removed the roof… “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
- Luke 7:1-9 – He entered Capernaum. A centurion had a servant… “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof… but say the word.”
- Matthew 8:14-16 – When Jesus entered Peter’s house… that evening they brought to Him many.
- Matthew 17:24 – When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter.
- John 6:24, 59, 66 – They came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus… He said these things in the synagogue, as He taught at Capernaum… After this many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him.
- Matthew 11:23-24 – “And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”
- Luke 4:23, 31 – “What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.”… He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee.
- Matthew 4:18-22 – Walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers… “Follow me.”
He went and lived in Capernaum by the sea. The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light.
He came to His own city. Immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue.
He entered the house of Simon. They told Him about her. That evening they brought to Him many.
You, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades.
He said these things in the synagogue at Capernaum. Many turned back and no longer walked with Him.
Do not confuse a front-row seat with a new heart. Light came to that shore. Works were done. Woe still fell where they would not repent. Live in the Light. Follow. Capernaum is proof that seeing is not the same as believing.
