The accuser of the brethren is Satan,
who accused them day and night.
The accuser of our brothers has been thrown down,
who accuses them day and night before our God.
They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony.
Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect?
Satan is the accuser. The Hebrew name is already the title. In Job he presents himself and speaks against a righteous man. In Zechariah he stands to accuse Joshua the high priest, and the Lord rebuke him. In Revelation the voice in heaven says the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, the one who accused them day and night before God. The brethren conquer him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.
- Satan does not only tempt. He charges. The court is before God.
- Jesus is the advocate and the sacrifice. A charge against God’s elect fails because God justifies.
- Lucifer is the older name some use for this enemy. The work named here is accusation, and that work is thrown down.
Day and night is the pace. The throw-down is the verdict in heaven. The brethren still answer him with the blood and the testimony, not with a cleaner record of their own.
He accused them day and night.
He has been thrown down.
