The Book of Colossians is
a powerful letter
written by the Apostle Paul
that presents Jesus Christ as
supreme, sufficient, and the very center of the Christian life.
It is one of the most Christ-centered books in the New Testament.
Colossians was written to the church in Colossae, a small city in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). The letter strongly emphasizes the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ in response to false teachings that were threatening the young church. Paul presents Jesus as the Creator, the Head of the Church, and the One in whom all the fullness of God dwells.
The central message of Colossians can be summarized in one verse:
“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” (Colossians 2:9-10)
¶ Author and Date
The Apostle Paul wrote this letter while imprisoned in Rome, most likely between A.D. 60–62. He had never personally visited the church in Colossae but had heard about their faith through Epaphras, who had brought the gospel to them. Paul wrote to encourage them and to correct dangerous false teachings.
Paul wrote Colossians for two main reasons:
- To combat false teaching — Teachers were promoting a mixture of Jewish legalism, Greek philosophy, and mystical ideas that diminished the person and work of Christ.
- To exalt Christ — Paul presents Jesus as completely sufficient for salvation and the Christian life. Believers do not need anything beyond Him.
- The Supremacy of Christ — Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the Creator of all things, and the Head of the Church.
- The Sufficiency of Christ — Believers are complete in Christ and do not need additional religious rituals or secret knowledge.
- The Mystery of Christ — The great mystery is “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
- Warnings Against False Teaching — Paul warns against empty philosophy, legalism, angel worship, and asceticism.
- Christian Living — Because of who Christ is, believers are called to put off the old self and put on the new self, living in love, unity, and holiness.
- Colossians 1:15-18 — He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible… And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church…
- Colossians 1:27 — To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
- Colossians 2:9-10 — For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
- Colossians 3:1-2 — If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Colossians has powerful application for believers today:
- It reminds us that Jesus is enough — we do not need to add anything to His finished work.
- It calls us to keep Christ central in our thinking and living.
- It warns against being led astray by empty religious ideas or legalism.
- It gives practical guidance for living a holy and loving Christian life in the home, workplace, and church.
- It encourages us to set our minds on things above rather than being consumed by earthly concerns.
