Brokenness is the heart God will not despise.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.
A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
He dwells in the high and holy place,
and also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit.
It is not self-hatred.
It is the end of the proud self before the Holy One,
and the place where mercy begins to rebuild.
David spoke it after the prophet exposed him. He had no bull left that could fix what he had done. He offered the only sacrifice still possible: a spirit that had stopped defending itself.
Isaiah heard the same word from the high and holy God. The One who inhabits eternity looks to the humble and contrite, to revive them, not to crush them for sport.
Jesus preached blessing on the poor in spirit and on those who mourn. He told of a tax collector who would not lift his eyes and went home justified. He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and said, This is My body.
Paul said we have this treasure in jars of clay, and that the breaking of the outer life can show that the power belongs to God.
Scripture’s brokenness is therefore repentance with the spine taken out of pride. It weeps. It confesses. It stops using other people as a foil. It does not become a pose or a brand. A heart can learn to enjoy the feeling of being crushed and never obey. That is not what David meant. He asked to be washed, restored, and then to teach transgressors the way. Brokenness that is real becomes usefulness.
The Lord binds up the brokenhearted and proclaims liberty to captives.
He does not leave the contrite in the dust as a monument.
- God does not despise the broken heart. He despises the proud one that will not break.
- Contrite means crushed over sin, not crushed by self-pity.
- The high God chooses the lowly as His second address.
- Broken bread is how the life of Christ is given. Jars of clay are how it is carried.
- Tears without turning are not the sacrifice He named.
- Restoration is the aim. Teach transgressors follows create in me a clean heart.
- The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. Near is the point.
- Contrite Heart – Pride ended; sin owned.
- Broken Spirit – The sacrifice left when offerings are not enough.
- Poor in Spirit – Empty hands at the door of the kingdom.
- Revived, Not Displayed – He dwells with the lowly to give life.
- Broken Bread – The Son given; the church as a loaf shared.
- Jars of Clay – Weak vessels so the power is seen as His.
- Bound Up – The same Lord who breaks the proud heals the crushed.
