God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all; therefore His people are called to walk in the light. The moral law, summarized in the Ten Commandments and fulfilled in the law of love, reveals what is pleasing to God. Jesus intensifies the demand by locating righteousness in the heart as well as in outward action. The apostles apply these truths to every sphere of life: speech, sexuality, work, money, authority, marriage, and relationships within the church and the world. Biblical ethics is the call to live as those who belong to a holy God. It is not a ladder by which we climb to acceptance; it is the path of those who have already been accepted in Christ. The same grace that saves also trains us to renounce ungodliness and to live upright and godly lives. Ethics begins with the character of God, is revealed in His Word, is fulfilled in Christ, and is empowered by the Spirit. It reaches the heart as well as the hand, the private thought as well as the public act. Therefore present your body as a living sacrifice. Walk by the Spirit. Put on the new self. Love God with all that you are and your neighbor as yourself. This is the ethics of the kingdom — and the only ethics that will stand when every human standard has passed away.
