Sons of the Kingdom are those who belong to the reign of God as true children of it.
In the parable of the weeds, Jesus said the good seed is the sons of the kingdom, sown by the Son of Man in the field of the world.
In Capernaum He warned that many would come from east and west to sit with Abraham, while the sons of the kingdom would be thrown into outer darkness.
The name is an honor. It is also a warning. Birthright without faith is not harvest.
Jesus used the phrase in two directions.
- First He named the crop that the Son of Man sows: good seed, sons of the kingdom, growing beside sons of the evil one until the end of the age. Those sons are not self-appointed. They are sown. They will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father when the weeds are burned.
- Then, after a Gentile centurion’s faith, Jesus marveled and said the table of the patriarchs would be filled from the nations, and the sons of the kingdom—those who assumed the seats by blood and nearness—would be cast out, weeping. Israel had the promises, the covenants, and the King in their streets. Some trusted the family name more than the King.
The church can make the same error with baptism, pew, and vocabulary.
- Sons of the kingdom in the parable are the real crop.
- Sons of the kingdom in Matthew 8 are the privileged who refuse the faith that Gentiles showed.
Paul later said not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and that those who belong to Christ are Abraham’s offspring.
The kingdom has children by the Word and by new birth. It does not keep a chair forever for unbelief.
- In Matthew 13 the sons of the kingdom are the good seed. The Son of Man sows them.
- In Matthew 8 the same title can name those who claimed the kingdom and missed the feast.
- Privilege is real. Privilege is not the same as shining like the sun.
- East and west will sit down with Abraham. Faith is the ticket, not the map of the parish.
- Weeds are sons of the evil one. Do not confuse the two seeds, and do not harvest early.
- The Father’s kingdom is the barn and the shine. Outer darkness is the other end of the phrase.
- Hear the warning if you grew up near the King. Receive the comfort if He sowed you in a hard field.
- Good Seed – Sown by the Son of Man; the true children of the reign.
- In the World – The field is not a greenhouse. Weeds grow beside them.
- Until Harvest – Identity now; separation at the end of the age.
- Table of Abraham – Many from the nations recline; assumed sons may be out.
- Faith of the Outsider – The centurion’s word: only say the word.
- Shine – The righteous in the kingdom of their Father.
- Not Mere Descent – Children of the promise, not of the flesh only.
- Matthew 13:37-38, 43 – “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one… Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.”
- Matthew 8:10-12 – “When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, ‘Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”
- Luke 13:28-29 – “In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God.”
- Matthew 21:43 – “Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.”
- John 1:12-13 – “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
- John 3:3, 5 – “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God… unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
- Romans 9:6-8 – “For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel… This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.”
- Galatians 3:7, 29 – “Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham… And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”
- Galatians 4:28 – “Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.”
- Colossians 1:13 – “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.”
- James 2:5 – “Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?”
- Matthew 5:3, 10 – “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven… Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
- Matthew 13:24 – The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.
- Daniel 7:18, 27 – The saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom.
- 1 Thessalonians 2:12 – “…we exhorted each one of you… to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.”
- 2 Peter 1:10-11 – Be diligent to confirm your calling; an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided.
The good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The Son of Man sows them in the world.
Many will come from east and west and recline with Abraham. The sons of the kingdom will be thrown into outer darkness—if they trusted the name and refused the King.
Not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, but of God.
Those of faith are the sons of Abraham. If you are Christ’s, you are offspring and heir.
Do not sleep on the title. Do not despair if you were sown far from the old rows.
Walk worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
