The Trinity is
the biblical teaching that
there is one God
who exists eternally in three distinct persons:
the Father,
the Son,
and the Holy Spirit.
Each person is fully God,
yet there is only one God.
¶ Biblical Understanding of the Trinity
The word “Trinity” does not appear in the Bible, but the concept is clearly taught throughout Scripture. The Bible consistently presents God as one, while also revealing three distinct persons who are each fully God and who relate to one another.
The Trinity is not a contradiction (one God and three Gods), nor is it the idea that God simply appears in three different forms at different times. Instead, it is the truth that within the one being of God there are three co-equal, co-eternal persons who share the same divine nature.
- One God — There is only one true God (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 45:5).
- Three Persons — The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are distinct from one another.
- Each is Fully God — The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God.
- Co-equal and Co-eternal — No person of the Trinity is greater or lesser than the others, and all have always existed.
- Distinct Roles — While equal in nature, the three persons have different roles in the work of creation, redemption, and sanctification.
- Matthew 28:19 — Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
- 2 Corinthians 13:14 — The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
- John 1:1-2 — In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
- Acts 5:3-4 — But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit… You have not lied to men but to God.”
- John 14:16-17 — And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever — the Spirit of truth…
- Genesis 1:26 — Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…”
Understanding the Trinity has important implications for the Christian life:
- It helps us know who God truly is — He is relational within Himself (Father, Son, and Spirit in eternal relationship).
- It deepens our worship — We worship one God who exists in three persons.
- It explains salvation — The Father planned it, the Son accomplished it through His death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit applies it to our lives.
- It affects prayer — We pray to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
- It shows the beauty of relationship — God has always existed in perfect love and relationship within the Trinity.
- It guards against false teaching — A correct understanding of the Trinity protects us from heresies that distort who God is.
The doctrine of the Trinity is one of the most profound truths in the Bible. While it is beyond full human comprehension, it is clearly revealed in Scripture and essential to the Christian faith.
