The name originates in Judges 6. Israel was suffering under the oppression of the Midianites. God called Gideon, a reluctant and fearful man, to deliver His people. When the Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and commissioned him, Gideon was overwhelmed with fear, realizing he had seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.
The Lord said to him, “Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.” In response, Gideon built an altar to the Lord and named it Yahweh Shalom (Judges 6:22-24).
In a time of national distress and personal fear, Gideon declared that the Lord is Peace.
Biblical peace (shalom) is not primarily an inner feeling, though it includes that. It is the condition of things being as they should be — right relationship with God, with others, and within oneself. It is the restoration of what sin has broken.
Only God can give this kind of peace. Human efforts may produce temporary calm or negotiated ceasefires, but lasting shalom comes from the Lord alone.

True and lasting shalom is found in Him alone, and ultimately in the finished work of Jesus Christ, our peace.
