The title Bread of Life is
one of the seven “I Am” statements
of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of John.
Jesus used this title to
reveal Himself as the only source of
true spiritual nourishment and eternal life.
Just as physical bread sustains physical life,
Jesus sustains spiritual life
for all who come to Him in faith.
The title “Bread of Life” comes from John 6. After Jesus miraculously fed over five thousand people with five loaves and two fish, the crowd followed Him, hoping for more physical bread. Jesus used the opportunity to redirect their focus from temporary physical needs to eternal spiritual realities.
In this chapter, Jesus declares:
“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)
He later adds:
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (John 6:51)
By calling Himself the Bread of Life, Jesus communicates several important truths:

Jesus’ claim to be the Bread of Life has strong connections to the Old Testament. When the Israelites wandered in the wilderness, God provided manna from heaven to sustain them (Exodus 16). Jesus directly connects Himself to this event:
“Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.” (John 6:49-50)
While the manna sustained physical life for a time, Jesus offers bread that gives eternal life.
Many see a connection between the Bread of Life and the Lord’s Supper (Communion). When Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, He broke bread and said, “This is my body, which is given for you” (Luke 22:19). The imagery of eating His flesh and drinking His blood in John 6 points forward to the significance of His sacrificial death, which believers remember and proclaim in the Lord’s Supper.
The title “Bread of Life” reveals Jesus as the One who alone can satisfy the deepest hunger of the human soul. Physical bread can only sustain life for a short time, but Jesus gives bread that leads to eternal life. To “eat” this bread is to receive Him by faith — to trust in His person and His finished work on the cross.
