Eternal Life is
the gift of everlasting life
that God gives to those who believe in Jesus Christ.
It is not only about living forever in the future,
but also about entering into a personal, intimate relationship with God
that begins in the present.
¶ Biblical Understanding of Eternal Life
The Bible teaches that eternal life is much more than simply existing forever. It is a new quality of life that comes from knowing God personally. Jesus defined eternal life this way:
“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)
Eternal life begins the moment a person trusts in Jesus Christ for salvation. While it will be fully experienced in the future (after death and resurrection), it is a present reality for every believer. It includes forgiveness of sins, peace with God, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the certain hope of living with God forever.
- John 3:16 — For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
- John 17:3 — And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
- John 10:10 — The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
- 1 John 5:11-12 — And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
- Romans 6:23 — For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- John 5:24 — Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Eternal life includes several important realities:
- Knowing God Personally — A real, growing relationship with the Father and the Son.
- Abundant Life Now — Peace, purpose, joy, and spiritual life in the present.
- Freedom from Condemnation — No longer under judgment for sin.
- The Holy Spirit’s Presence — God living within the believer.
- Future Glorification — A perfect, resurrected body and eternal life in the New Heaven and New Earth.
- Unending Fellowship with God — Being with the Lord forever in perfect joy and righteousness.
Eternal life is a gift from God. It cannot be earned by good works, religious activity, or moral effort. It is received by:
- Believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
- Trusting in His death and resurrection
- Receiving Him by faith
Once received, eternal life is secure and cannot be lost, because it is based on God’s promise and the finished work of Christ.
Understanding eternal life brings great encouragement to believers:
- It gives hope beyond this present life.
- It motivates holy living and faithfulness.
- It provides comfort when facing death or loss.
- It helps believers live with an eternal perspective rather than being consumed by temporary things.
- It deepens love and gratitude toward God for the gift He has freely given.
Eternal life is the greatest gift anyone can receive, and it is offered freely to all who will trust in Jesus Christ.
