The centurion at the cross exclaimed that this man was innocent. The apostles later proclaimed Him the Holy and Righteous One, the One who knew no sin, who committed no sin, and in whose mouth no deceit was found. Because He was without sin, He could be the perfect substitute. God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
