The Watchful Servants are the household told to
stay dressed for work, with lamps burning, until the knock.
Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning,
and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast,
so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.
Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes.
If he comes in the second watch,
or in the third,
and finds them awake,
blessed are those servants.
You also must be ready,
for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Jesus turns the night into a test of love. A master is at a wedding. The hour of his return is not posted on the gate. The servants’ work is not to guess the watch. It is to be already at the door: loins girded, lamps lit, hands on the latch. When he knocks they open at once. No scramble for oil. No excuse that the third watch was an unfair hour. He will dress himself for service and have them recline, and he will come and serve them. That reversal is the shock of the blessing. The waiting ones are waited on by the Lord.
Peter asks if the parable is for them or for all. The answer runs into the faithful manager and the servant who knew the will and did not get ready.
Mark says it another way: it is like a man going on a journey, who leaves his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
What I say to you I say to all:
Stay awake.
- Watchfulness is readiness, not a hobby of dates.
- Lamps burning means the night is expected. Darkness is not an excuse.
- Open at once is the test. Delay at the door is already sleep.
- The blessing includes a Master who serves His awake servants.
- Second watch or third does not change the assignment.
- Each has his work. The doorkeeper has his. Sleep is a shared danger.
- The Son of Man comes at an hour you do not expect. That sentence is the reason for the lamps.
- Dressed for Action – Loins girded; the work clothes stay on.
- Lamps Burning – Light kept through the wait.
- At the Door – Ready to open at once when He knocks.
- Any Watch – Evening, midnight, cockcrow, morning.
- Blessed Awake – Found watching, not found explaining.
- Master Serves – He girds Himself and waits on them.
- Said to All – Not a riddle for a few specialists.
