The New Jerusalem is
the glorious city
described in the Bible as
the capital of the New Heaven and New Earth.
It is the eternal dwelling place of God with His redeemed people.
The New Jerusalem is introduced in Revelation 21 as a literal city that comes down from God out of heaven. It represents the ultimate fulfillment of God’s desire to dwell with His people in perfect relationship and unbroken fellowship.
Unlike earthly cities, the New Jerusalem is perfect, holy, and eternal. It is filled with the presence and glory of God, and it serves as the center of the new creation.
- Revelation 21:2 — Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
- Revelation 21:10-11 — And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.
- Revelation 21:22-23 — But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.
- Revelation 22:1-2 — And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
- Revelation 21:27 — But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
The Bible gives a beautiful and detailed description of the city, including:
- Massive walls made of jasper with twelve foundations of precious stones
- Twelve gates made of pearls, each guarded by an angel
- Streets of pure gold, like transparent glass
- No temple, because God and the Lamb are its temple
- No need for sun or moon, because the glory of God and the Lamb provide all light
- A river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God
- The tree of life bearing fruit and leaves for the healing of the nations
- Complete absence of sin, death, sorrow, pain, and the curse
¶ Relationship to the New Heaven and New Earth
The New Jerusalem is the centerpiece of the New Heaven and New Earth. While the entire creation will be renewed, the New Jerusalem is presented as the special place where God will dwell visibly and intimately with His people forever. It represents the ultimate realization of God’s covenant promise: “They shall be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God.”
The promise of the New Jerusalem gives believers strong hope and encouragement:
- It shows that God’s ultimate plan is not just to rescue us from this world, but to bring us into perfect fellowship with Him in a renewed creation.
- It motivates us to live with an eternal perspective.
- It reminds us that our future home is far more wonderful than anything we can imagine.
- It encourages faithfulness, knowing that one day we will dwell with God in unimaginable beauty and joy.
The New Jerusalem represents the glorious future that awaits all who belong to Jesus Christ.
