Paradise is
a biblical term used to describe
the place of blessing, rest, and conscious presence with God
where believers go immediately after death.
¶ Biblical Understanding of Paradise
The word “Paradise” appears only a few times in the New Testament, but it carries significant meaning. It refers to a place of joy and fellowship with God for the righteous dead.
In Scripture, Paradise is often understood as the present Heaven — the temporary dwelling place of believers who have died, where they are consciously with the Lord while awaiting the future resurrection and the New Heaven and New Earth.
Jesus Himself used the word when speaking to the repentant thief on the cross, assuring him of immediate presence with Him after death.
- Luke 23:42-43 — Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
- 2 Corinthians 12:2-4 — I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows—how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
- Revelation 2:7 — He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.
¶ Paradise and the Afterlife
The Bible presents Paradise as:
- A place of immediate blessing after death for those who belong to Christ.
- A place of conscious existence and fellowship with the Lord (not “soul sleep”).
- The current location of departed believers, distinct from the future New Heaven and New Earth described in Revelation 21–22.
- A place of comfort and rest, in contrast to the place of torment for the unrighteous (as seen in Luke 16:19-31).
While Paradise is wonderful, the Bible teaches that the ultimate and eternal state for believers will be the New Heaven and New Earth, where God will dwell with His people forever in a renewed creation.
The Bible’s teaching about Paradise brings comfort to believers in several ways:
- It assures us that when a Christian dies, they are immediately with the Lord.
- It removes the fear of death for those who trust in Christ.
- It encourages us to live with an eternal perspective.
- It reminds us that our loved ones who have died in Christ are safe and at peace with Jesus.
Paradise is not the final destination, but it is a wonderful and secure place for believers until the glorious return of Christ and the establishment of the new creation.
