In the New Testament he confronts Jesus in the wilderness, seeks to sift the disciples, blinds the minds of unbelievers, and prowls like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. Jesus calls him a murderer from the beginning and the father of lies. The cross is the decisive moment of his defeat: Christ disarmed the rulers and authorities and destroyed the one who has the power of death. The Devil still works in the present age through deception, temptation, and accusation, yet his time is short and his doom is certain. Believers resist him by standing firm in the faith, clothed in the armor of God, and confident in the finished work of Christ.

The Devil still prowls and still seeks to devour, but he cannot snatch the believer from the hand of the Father, and he flees when resisted in faith. The church overcomes him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. His time is short, and the lake of fire is prepared for him. Therefore stand firm. Put on the whole armor of God. Resist the devil. And rest in the finished victory of Jesus Christ, who appeared to destroy the works of the devil and who will soon crush him under your feet.
