Fallen angels are
angels who rebelled against God
and were cast out of heaven.
They are spiritual beings who once served God
but chose to follow Satan in his rebellion.
Scripture presents them as
real, personal, and powerful enemies of
God and His people.
They are often closely associated with
demons and the forces of darkness.
The Bible gives several key references to the fall of angels:
- Revelation 12:7-9 describes a war in heaven in which Michael and his angels fought against the dragon (Satan) and his angels. The dragon and his angels were defeated and thrown down to the earth.
- 2 Peter 2:4 states that God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness.
- Jude 6 speaks of angels who did not stay within their own position of authority but left their proper dwelling, and are kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment.
These passages show that a group of angels rebelled, were judged, and now operate in opposition to God.
¶ Nature and Characteristics
Fallen angels are:
- Created beings — They were originally good angels made by God.
- Personal and intelligent — They have will, personality, and the ability to communicate and strategize.
- Powerful but limited — They are stronger than humans but still under God’s ultimate authority.
- Deceptive — They often work through lies, false teaching, and spiritual counterfeits.
- Organized — Scripture indicates ranks and hierarchies among spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12).
Many Bible teachers connect fallen angels with the demons that appear throughout the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament.
Fallen angels work to:
- Oppose God’s purposes and the advance of the gospel.
- Deceive individuals and nations.
- Tempt, accuse, and oppress people.
- Promote false religion and spiritual counterfeits.
- Influence the spiritual atmosphere over regions and cultures (see Daniel 10).
They are active in the unseen realm but are not all-powerful. Believers have authority over them through Jesus Christ.

Fallen angels are real spiritual beings who chose rebellion against God. While they are powerful and active, they are limited by God’s sovereignty and have already been defeated through the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Believers are called to stand firm against their schemes, not in fear, but in the authority and victory that Christ has already won.
