The Prince of This World is a title Jesus gives to Satan, describing his temporary rule and influence over the fallen world system.

Later He says that the Holy Spirit will convict the world concerning judgment, “because the ruler of this world is judged.” These statements identify Satan as a real spiritual power who holds sway over the present world order in rebellion against God, yet whose authority is already broken by the cross and whose final end is certain. Other New Testament writers use similar language: the god of this age, the prince of the power of the air, the whole world lying in the power of the evil one. The title “Prince of This World” therefore captures both the present reality of spiritual opposition and the certainty of Christ’s victory.

The Prince of This World is a real adversary with real influence, yet he is a defeated foe. Jesus called him the ruler of this world and then announced his judgment and casting out. At the cross the prince was disarmed and put to open shame. He still blinds minds and opposes the gospel, and the whole world lies under his power, but he has no claim on those who belong to Christ. The Spirit convicts the world that this ruler stands judged. His time is short, and the lake of fire is prepared for him. Therefore take heart. The One who overcame the world is greater than the prince of this world. Live in the freedom of the finished victory, resist the devil firm in the faith, and look for the day when the kingdom of the world becomes the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ.
